I didn't blend and used the darker image only (apologies Jimmy). Some initial processing in ACR. PS: horizon correction via manual Lens Correction; 4 curves layers for darkening and contrast; Hue/saturation layer for reduction in roads and foreground colour; Unsharp mask and JM's detail enhancer to finish. Hope you like it!

Different take, I like it.

I'm going to have a try at this I think, purely to get what I do wrong explained!!

ETA: First question has to be WTF is a .dng file, and why are they in that format?

OK, my take. I've gone for subtly, (I hope.)

Adjusted both images with camera raw filter.

Blended using a dark 4 mask in Raya 5.

Curves and colour adjusted for final image.

file with the DNG file extension is most likely an Adobe Digital Negative Raw Image file. The format is a response to the lack of an open standard for digital camera raw formats. Other raw files can be converted to DNG so that a wider variety of software can use the images.

Hello everyone,

I'm totally out of my comfort zone when it comes to cityscapes, especially by night, but practice doesn't hurt, so here is my try, and my workflow:

In ACR:
1.  On the dark exposure I used Recovery to recover all possible details of the overexposed spots.
2.  On both exposures I corrected the distortion.  I didn't bother with the CA since I didn't see any.

In PS:
1.  I used RP5 Quick Blending / Dark 1
2.  I adjusted the generated mask a bit (Blacks 39)
3.  Flattened image
4.  Cropped and did minor cloning-out mainly in the bottom left hand corner.
4.  Generated the Midtones 2 Mask using RP5 InstaMask 4.   The purpose was to make the midtones a bit darker.
7.  Added the generated mask to the Levels layer using InstaMask.
8.  Adjusted the shadows of that Levels layer to 35.  I didn't want to make it too dark, because I wanted to preserve the hazy looking background (horizon).
9.  Since I like the marina in the bottom left hand corner (I think it adds balance and interest), I wanted to make it stand out, so I used RP Dodge & Burn tool to generate a Highlights layer.  I painted with white on that layer over the boats and some parts of the buildings that I wanted to make brighter
10. Added Orton using RP5
11.  Removed Noise with Raya Pro, located under RP 5 Actions and Filters tab.
12.  Resized to 2400px wide with Raya Pro, but saved with quality 10 to make sure is under 2.0MB.  🙂

I did nothing to the colors, since I like the original colors of the image, plus, I'm not much for super vibrant and saturated colors, so for me, this image is naturally perfect in terms of colors.

Feedback and criticism welcomed.

Maria
